Are you interested in cycling for pleasure as well as work? If so may we introduce the CTC?

The CTC is the UK's national cycling club with some 70,000 members, making it the country's largest cycling association. Despite its size, the CTC still has a "local feel" to it. The "local feel" comes from the divided structure of the club. The first division is the District Association (DA for short). The DA covers a postal area, such as Oxfordshire. Each DA is run by the members residing within that area.

The DA is further divided into "sections". The sections are run by, and for members within a smaller area than the main DA.

In Oxfordshire we have the main DA which is known as the Oxfordshire District Association. Then come the sections.

The City Section caters for the City of Oxford and area members.

The West Oxon Section caters for Witney and area members.

The Wantage Section caters for Wantage and area members.

There are also associated groups within Oxfordshire such as The Abingdon Wheelers, and the Banbury Star Cyclists' Club.

The CTC offers a wide variety of rides for its members throughout the year, and nearly all are `led rides'. This means that the "ride leader" has chosen the destination and the route. Most of the regular rides are held on Sundays. In the midweek there are led rides on alternate Wednesdays and evening rides and pub nights etc.. There are other social events as well. On any regular CTC ride new riders who may not be CTC members are very welcome. Many who try out the rides become members and find that their cycling horizons, and enjoyment are greatly expanded.

Apart from the rides organised by the local sections the CTC offers a wide variety of services to the cyclist such as ......

·        Insurance

·        Organised Holidays

·        Information on cycling routes

·        Technical advice

·        Legal advice

·        Campaigning for the rights of cyclists

·        A bimonthly magazine

for more details of membership benefits etc try the national CTC web site.

Tempted? Why not try a ride with one of the sections? Details of our rides are available as runs lists for West Oxon and Wantage on this web site or are published in a quarterly magazine entitled "The Oxford Cyclist". This magazine is obtainable from most of the cycle shops in Oxfordshire. If you want to know what the sections have been up to recently look at Oxford, West Oxon or Wantage Section news also available on this site. Remember -  you don't need to be a member of the CTC in order to try one of our rides!

Try a shorter ride to start with if you are not used to riding great distances. Please do not be concerned that you will be left behind. We always aim to ride at or around the pace of the slowest rider. In our runs lists, you will see that we classify our rides to help people decide whether or not the ride is suitable for them. The classifications run something like this:

* 25-40 mile all day ride with frequent stops. The pace will normally average 10 mph which is the speed most cyclists use around town.

** 40-60 mile all day ride with a steady pace. Once again there will be at least two stops for morning coffee and lunch. Sometimes a ride will visit a place of interest such as a historic house, museum, gardens, etc. If you are happy riding at 11-12 mph then this kind of ride will suit you.

*** 50-100 mile ride. This kind of ride may not necessarily be any faster than a ** ride but it is longer and/or hillier. There will be morning coffee and lunch stops.

Please make sure that your bicycle is in a roadworthy condition, and carry some waterproof clothing, in case of a change in the weather. Most rides are all day with a mid morning coffee stop and a lunch stop. These stops mean that our rides are always sociable affairs! In the winter most lunch stops are for pub lunches which represent very good value for money. In the summer, lunch may be a picnic.
