Oxfordshire Committee Meeting,
Held on 2nd
September 2008 at Eve’s
Those Present: - Eve Thornton, Pat Hurt, Helen
Beane, Peter J Hallowell. James Dawton, Kevin Hickman, Brian Hipwell.
1)
APOLOGIES
FOR ABSENCE –Steve Quartermain.
2)
MINUTES
OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING –were read, accepted as correct and signed by JD
3)
MATTERS
ARISING FROM THE MINUTES. The actions (ongoing and otherwise) from the April
meeting were reviewed. Completed items, along with appropriate comments, are
listed in the Table of Completed Actions. Those still ongoing/pending were
placed in the Table of Ongoing Actions. New actions were placed in the Table of
New Actions at the end of the minutes.
4) SECRETARY’S REPORT AND CORRESPONDENCE.
Correspondence received from Linton Lodge Hotel wondering if we would consider them as a venue for lunch stops, from Peter Gibbs asking if we might be interested in cycling the cols near their house in the Haute Pyrenees and from researcher for Design Against Crime Research and Innovation Centre in London asking about cycle parking in Oxford.
I do despair that, despite the number of members who are happy to go out on rides, there is a reluctance to stand for a committee which only meets four or five times a year.
James asked me to spell out the consequences of us not being able to field a DA committee.
Eileen and Peter J, who have done a lot for cycling, rang to express their concern and the only other response has been a suggestion from John H. that we run the DA from a website.
I will invite Norman Hayes, SW councillor to our AGM, if he is not available Barry Jordan, SE councillor, has told me that he is willing to travel from Kent to attend.
A reminder that I will need a brief annual report from each of our four sections
I asked DA reps to let me know if the email re the consequences of no DA had been circulated to all of the members in their group but neither Wantage nor Midweek have responded.
Eve Thornton
5)
TREASURER’S
REPORT. No changes.
6)
REGISTRAR’S
REPORT.
18 members joined in April and May and a further 12 in June. I haven’t received anything more recent, this may be linked to Alex Geen’s departure although I understood that the lists were being sent out by Membership Department.
P.S. An additional list has been received today.

7)
SECTION
REPORTS
(a) West Oxon Section. No written report
received
(b) Midweek section. Nothing new to report
(c) City Section.
Rides have
continued through the variable summer, with a fairly good turn out on the
whole.
8 section members
went to the Semaine Federal in Samaur, and 4 went to help out at the CTC
Birthday rides in Moreton in the Marsh.
We have managed to
sort a substitute section treasurer, almost in time for the next agm!
The womens short
rides continue with a high level of support (key, make them shorter than you
think it could be possible to ride a bike for!). How they fit into the local
CTC structure will be looked at in the winter once the DA position is clearer.
James Dawton
(d) Wantage Section.
Since the last DA Committee Meeting I have recorded for the Wantage Section:-
Four Saturday afternoon moderate rides, with 8 to 12 cyclists attending.
Four Saturday afternoon easy rider rides 7 to 11 cyclists attending.
Three Sunday rides, with 6 to 19 riders attending, the latter being the anniversary ride. Thanks to Steve Swanton.
One Sunday morning ride with 5 cyclist attending.
Two Saturday off road rides with 3and 5 cyclists attending. There would have been more, but they fell victim to the wet weather.
Sixteen Tuesday evening rides with 3 to 30 cyclists attending, the latter being a record for the Wantage Section. Two of these rides were cancelled due to the rain flooding the Vale. The last of these successful rides is next Tuesday the 9th September, then the Turbo training at DOTbike resumes.
Highlights for this period included Steve and Lorna getting married on the 1st August; A collection is being made by Edith to give Steve and Lorna a suitable gift from members of the local CTC.
Satuday 10th May thirteen section members attended a bike maintenance day at Dot bike.
Saturday 7th June no one turned up for “five Miles to Fabulous”( the girls must like riding with the boys ), so Edith and Brian raced across to Aston Pottery to join West Oxon for tea , who appeared to have more success in getting the lady’s out.
Sunday 8th June seventeen cyclists supported a family picnic at Ardington. Thanks to Sorrel.
Also on Sunday 8th June Neil W, Pat H, Amanda S, Jon S and Matt C completed the Paris RouBaix.
Sunday 15th June eight section members supported the DA ride to Buscot House.
Saturday 21st June Wantage supported Two rides, Mavis Edith and Brian went on the Faringdon Ecobike ride spoilt by the weather but still enjoyable. Geoff lead a car assisted ride along the Ridgeway from Avebury with three cyclists.
Saturday 19th July another very successful DA BBQ thanks to Mavis and Lou.
Saturday 2nd August Eve, Edith and Brian cycled to Morton in the Marsh for an enjoyable week at the Birthday Rides.
Saturday 16th August Chris W did an away day, car assisted ride to the south east Cotswolds supported by six members.
We have had a busy summer despite the weather:
Finally Saturday 30th August Sorrel led a beginner’s off road ride; on the tracks around Wantage, Grove and Haney supported by eleven cyclists two being very keen boys aged seven.
The Wantage section has held one committee meeting during this period on the 11th August.
CTC Wantage is happy to remain with the Oxfordshire DA, provided it still exists. There does seem to be some confusion over the latest HQ policy and subsequent voting rights, Details have been circulated via Wantage chairman monthly letter by email.
CTC Wantage does not want to take on the DA role but will be advising their members to register as CTC Wantage Members at their next AGM to enable them to vote at both Wantage and DA AGMs as HQ dictates.
The Wantage CTC AGM is on Monday 6th October2008 at 17.30 hrs at the Greyhound,Public House, Letcombe Regis.

.
10) Do we have a Secretary for 2008/2009? If not,
how do we continue to function?
There have been no volunteers for the posts of
Secretary, Treasurer or Welfare Officer. Two possible options have emerged-
1. John Holding
has stated that he is prepared to manage CTC Oxfordshire with a Google Group
and email contact. The Committee thought that some issues could be managed this
way, but envisaged there would have to be some face-to-face meetings, certainly
the first meeting after the AGM. The Committee could meet without John if there
was an active Chairman. Meetings could be kept to a minimum and only held if
and when necessary, with most communication done by email.
2. Wantage have
elected to continue as a formal Member Group if the current DA folds but do not
feel they have the capacity to form a Parent Member Group. West Oxon proposes
to become an Informal Group. The City propose to be a Formal Group and the
Midweek Section have yet to decide, but will probably become an Informal Group.
Discussion- Do Wantage
appreciate that to be a Member Group on their own would involve the same number
of committee members as a Parent Member Group? The only position required to do
more would be the treasurer. Most of the work is generated down from National
Office rather than up from the Member Groups. PJH is prepared to volunteer as
Treasurer if there are no other candidates. The consensus of the Committee is
that the preferred option is (a) and to maintain the integrity of the CTC
Oxfordshire. (Action 30 JD To discuss with John Holding and Chris
Walters the options for running CTC
Oxfordshire)
11) ANY OTHER
BUSINESS-PH will cease to edit the Oxfordshire Cyclist Magazine after the
Winter 2008 Issue. The future of the magazine to be discussed with sections and
other Oxfordshire Cycling Organisations.
